Michael Marvin Howell

June 6, 1947 — October 29, 2023

Michael Marvin Howell died Oct. 29 at his home in Globe at the age of 76. Born in Central Heights to Marvin and Nell (Roper) Howell, Michael attended Miami High School, where as a star athlete he lettered in four sports in one year. He graduated Miami High School in 1965. He joined the Army, and he was a decorated Vietnam veteran earning a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. After his honorable discharge, he earned multiple degrees from the University of Arizona. In the 1970s he was a teacher and coach in Tucson, before moving home to work at Inspiration Copper and later Cyprus Miami, eventually becoming a safety engineer. He returned to teaching and finished his career at Globe High School. Active in the fire service, he spent many years as a volunteer firefighter and chief of the Central Heights Fire Department. He was a member of the Globe-Miami Gun Club, Elks Club, American Legion auxiliary and the National Rifle Association. An avid outdoorsman, Michael enjoyed four-wheeling, hunting and camping. He played softball and enjoyed traveling the state to play in tournaments. Golf was another special activity that he enjoyed. Spending time with family and friends was his greatest joy. Music was a big part of Michael’s life, whether he was singing on a road trip or chilling with friends, you could count on some genre of music playing. He was always a great cook, but retirement gave him time to explore new recipes and kitchen tools. And there was always Vi, and later Nora Beth, his faithful German Shorthair dogs to keep him company in his office. He is survived by his long-time life partner Ellen Kretsch; two children, Christopher (Jessica) of Miami Gardens, and Elizabeth (Joe) of Globe; his sister, Cindy Nowell (Terry) of Globe; five grandchildren; a niece and great-niece; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents Marvin and Nell. Services will be Saturday, Nov. 11 at 11 am at Lamont Mortuary of Globe. The family suggests contributions to the Globe-Miami Gun Club, PO Box 356, Miami, AZ 85539. Assisting the family; Lamont Mortuary of Globe located at 328 S. Hill St., Globe, AZ. (928) 425-5491
