Maria Refugio Noriega

Maria Refugio Noriega (Pepa) peacefully passed away on Sunday, March 17, 2024, at her home in Miami, Arizona, surrounded by her loving husband, children, and grandchildren. Born on April 28, 1933, in Douglas, AZ, Pepa's life was a tapestry of love, faith, and cherished memories.

At the age of 20, Pepa met Manuel B Noriega (Babe) at a September 16th celebration, weeks later they saw each other again, Pepa clad in a yellow dress that captured his heart—a story fondly recounted by Babe. Their enduring love story culminated in a remarkable 70th anniversary this past February. Pepa's life was a testament to her unwavering Catholic faith, dedicated to nurturing her children, indulging her grandchildren, and fostering bonds through gatherings with family and friends.

A masterful homemaker, Pepa's talents ranged from crafting clothes for her children to culinary prowess that embraced her Mexican heritage, renowned for her delectable tamales. Crafting rosaries was among her favorite pastimes, a reflection of her devout spirituality. She delighted in family outings to the casino, turning them into cherished traditions.

Pepa was preceded in death by her parents, Rosario and Ignacia Verdugo, daughter-in-law Christine Castaneda, and her siblings. She is survived by her loving husband, Manuel Noriega, her four children, Manuel (Linda) Noriega, Roger Noriega, Hortencia Lovin, and Nanette (Randy) Eberhardt, along with 15 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

The family extends gratitude to the compassionate staff at Thema Health Service and the numerous friends and relatives who provided support during this difficult time. Services to honor Pepa's life will be held on Monday, April 1, at Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, with viewing from 9:00 – 9:30 a.m., followed by Rosary from 9:30 – 10:00 a.m. and Mass from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. She will later be laid to rest in her hometown of Douglas, Arizona.
