On October 15, 2024, Jerri D. Mentzer left this world unexpectedly but with grace. She was 69 years old.
Born on July 30, 1955, to her mother, Anna Dellinger, Jerri was a remarkable woman whose life was defined by service, love, and resilience.
Jerri enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a Master at Arms in February of 1979. During boot camp, she saved the life of a fellow recruit and received an accommodation for her bravery. As her career progressed, she discovered a passion for training dogs and became a Narcotics Dog Handler. Among the many dogs she worked with, she shared a special bond with a terrier named Blackie, often recounting stories of their successful drug busts together.
One of Jerri's most memorable experiences was when she was assigned to the USS Iwo Jima, stationed in Beirut, Lebanon, an active war zone at the time. At a time when women were not permitted on combat ships or in war zones, her presence caused quite a stir among the crew leaving the captain in a bit of a panic. She often joked about being surrounded by 2,500 sailors and marines but slept with her dog.
While serving, Jerri submitted a Model Installation Program Initiative that, once approved, allowed women in the Navy to wear their hair in French or braided buns, offering a more presentable option for those with long hair.
While stationed in Naples, Italy, Jerri saw a man walk by and told her friend, “I’m going to marry that man.” Soon after, she was introduced to that man, and in 1985, she and Wayne Mentzer were married in a beautiful ceremony in Italy. In the same year she accepted the free gift of salvation from our Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ. Together, they raised three wonderful daughters in the love of the Lord.
Jerri leaves behind a legacy of love, friendship, and service. She is survived by her beloved husband of 39 years, Wayne; her daughters, Angela O’Leary Wyatt (husband Josh), Jennifer Meyer (husband Brian), and Ashley Mentzer; and her cherished grandchildren, Micah Glenn (husband Brian) and Josiah O’Leary Wyatt. She is also survived by her devoted service dog, Sophia.
Memorial service details to be announced.
