Francis William Victor, Jr., well known as “JR” was born May 13, 1949 in Morenci, Arizona to Francis Sr. and Cecelia Stevens Victor. He attended schools at Globe, St. John’s Catholic Mission in Laveen, Arizona and Sherman Indian High School in Riverside, California and college at Haskell Indian Jr. College in Lawrence, Kansas.
JR married his wife Christine Setalla from the Hopi Tribe and had four children. JR always worked hard to provide for his family. His work history included BIA Roads Department doing security for road construction on the Old Coolidge Dam road, BIA Forestry and later Pinto Valley Mines as a Haul Truck Driver, where he retired after 18 years.
JR was a very humble and quiet man who enjoyed life. He liked to tell stories and loved to joke around. He used old Apache words relating to food, plants and animals. His great grandmother, Ella Logan, gave all his siblings Apache names. The name he was given was “chaa” meaning beaver in Apache. He also enjoyed listening to oldies music, loved family gatherings and adored all his grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was an avid supporter of his favorite sports. He was a Braves fan, supporting San Carlos sports throughout the years since his daughter Carolyn attended San Carlos High School and excelled in cross country and basketball, traveling to support her. Carolyn later followed her dad’s footsteps and attended Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas where he became a Jayhawk fan of Kansas University, also in Lawrence.
Later he became a fan of the Miami Vandals in support of his granddaughter, Jalen Rose, who followed her mom’s footstep and excelled in cross country and basketball for Vandal athletics. He later supported her sports endeavor at Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa in which she was recruited on a scholarship for cross country. He was always very proud of her and told her to always do her best.
He loved and adored each of his grandchildren in his ways. He was always encouraging to them, took time to listen and talk to them. He was a very proud grandfather.
JR will be dearly missed, known for his humorous jokes and making everyone laugh. We each have fond memories of JR that we will always remember him by. Today, we honor him in celebration of his life, thankful for such a wonderful Dad, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, Cousin and Nephew.
