Evelyn S (Steele) Henry, age 84, passed away on November 5, 2020 at Chandler Regional Medical Center in Chandler, AZ. She was born on May 31, 1936 to Mollie Telto and Lloyd Steele, both of San Carlos, AZ. She married Jackson Henry, Sr. of Peridot, AZ and together they had eleven children, of which seven survived past the age of one year. Evelyn was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, auntie, and friend to many in San Carlos, where she and her late husband, Jackson, raised their children and made a life together. Evelyn learned the art of basket weaving from her mother-in-law, the late Cecelia Henry, and was a master basket weaver, teaching her daughters and some granddaughters the art of basket weaving. She was the matriarch of the family, enjoying cooking for her family and attending church every Sunday. Evelyn loved shopping, getting her hair done at the salon, eating Zuppa Toscana at Olive Garden, Globe-style Mexican food, attending the monthly Elder’s Luncheon at the Casino, and watching Gun Smoke. She was crowned the San Carlos Apache Tribe’s first Grandmother of the Year in 2010. She is survived by her children: Velma (Daniel) Billy, Carol (John Sr.) Salazar, Mary Jane (Dennis) Dudley, Jackson (Melissa) Henry, Jr., Velda Williams, Jason (Barbara) Henry, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Jackson Henry, Sr., her daughter Val Henry, and her grandsons Evan Volante and David Dudley. Funeral arrangements are being arranged by Lamont Mortuary of Globe, AZ. The funeral and viewing is scheduled as follows: Viewing – Sunday from 9am to 12 pm at Calvary Shadows Assembly of God church Funeral – Sunday, 1pm, at Calvary Shadows Assembly of God church Interment will follow the funeral at the Dudley residence in Peridot, AZ.
