Albert Salazar Chavez, Jr.

Born on April 28th, 1949, to Albert & Katherine Chavez in St. John’s, Arizona. Albert “Al” Chavez, Jr., passed away peacefully in his home in Roosevelt, Az from natural causes with his wife by his side on February 28th, 2024. For the last 2 years, Al and his wife spent half the year in St. John’s and half the year on Roosevelt. After graduating high school, Al joined the Marine Corps and served 3 tours in Vietnam where he earned numerous ribbons and medals including the bronze star and 5 purple hearts. After 4 years of service ended, he joined the National Guard Reserves for a total of 27 years of military service, retiring as a Gunnery Sargent. He worked as a firefighter and paramedic for the Phoenix Fire Department, where he retired after 25 years. He was also part of the FEMA team that helped in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and 9/11 along with many other places. He was involved in starting the Vietnam Veterans Association and the Bomberos Mentoring Program. In his free time, Al enjoyed working on projects around the house and yard, reading, playing cards, playing pool, and watching old westerns, especially those featuring John Wayne. Al was preceded in death by his parents, and his son Albert Julian Chavez. He is survived by his wife Lori, his siblings Flora, Luis, Joann, Miles, Rebecca, Theresa, and Stephen. His children, grandchildren, and Lori’s daughters Tyler and Trinity, who he treated like his own. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation.
