Modesto Lopez Monarrez, born February 17th 1923 in Globe Arizona to Valentina Lopez and Modesto Rubio Monarrez, passed away on December 1, 2015 in Globe, Arizona at the age of 92. Modesto also attended Hill Street School as a child. Modesto served in the US Navy during WWII aboard the USS Attala (APA-130), he was drafted and served until the end of the war. Modesto was in the invasion of Iwo Jima and was one of four landing barges out of a total of 22 that survived the invasion. While in the Navy he visited China, the Philippines and Hawaii. After the war, he returned to Globe where he was employed at Inspiration Consolidated Copper Company as a Blacksmith. Modesto retired from ICCC with 35 years of service. He was very active with the Holy Angles Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He loved riding his horses, hunting, fishing, Diamond Back Baseball, Bull riding and spending time with his family. Modesto married the love of his life, Belen Salas on July 25th 1948. Modesto is survived by his beautiful wife of 67 years Belen Salas Monarrez, two sons, Richard (Margaret) and David (Mary). He leaves behind 2 grandchildren Kenny and Desiree Gameros and 5 great grandchildren. Memorial Services are pending through Holy Angels Catholic Church
