Benjamin Allen Stevens

Benjamin Allen Stevens was born January 17, 1959, at Gila General Hospital and passed into eternal rest February 23, 2013, in Globe. His mother Sara Louise Hawkins Stevens was born in Owen County, Kentucky and came to Arizona as a registered nurse in the Indian Service. She worked at the San Carlos Hospital where she met Ben’s father George Henry Stevens, who had the best horses and knew much about his home, the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation. He later was the manager of the San Carlos Apache Registered Herd at Arsenic Tubs where Ben grew up riding motorcycles and hunting coyotes. He graduated from Holy Angels’ School and Globe High School. He then earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Arizona and a Masters of Business Administration from Northern Arizona University. His first postgraduate job was at Ford Motor Company in Ohio. He married Cathy Tittle, whom he met while a student at U of A. In 1986 he started North Shore Investments, trading stocks and bonds in Northbrook, Illinois, near Cathy’s hometown. He and Cathy had two children, Jeffrey Richard in 1988 and Julie Michelle in 1991. His greatest success came as a managing owner and partner of Benjamin and Jerold Brokerage, working through the Chicago Board of Trade. Ben’s surviving family members are Jeff of San Francisco and Cathy and Julie of Lake Forest, his mother Sara Stevens. He was blessed to be part of a large extended family locally: Vikki Stevens and Jody Daggett and their sons Lee and Henry, Daphne Stevens and her son Evan (Kyla Tiffany Quick) and grandson Arlo, John and Victoria Stevens and their children Garrett, Christian, and Leslie Lucas (Braden), Julia (David) Thompson and Madeline Polk and many more nieces and nephews. His sister Sara Stevens (Miguel Chavez) and their children Michael and Kathryn live in Las Vegas, New Mexico. His brother Carl (Ida) and his children Wenonah and Cody live in Chimayo, New Mexico. Ben was preceded in death by his father George Henry Stevens, brothers Jess Homer Stevens, George William Stevens, Robert Stevens, and sisters Cecilia Victor (Francis), Louise Harney (Joe), and Dorothy Stevens. Ben loved anything challenging. He ran marathons, rode dirt and street bikes, and enjoyed building model airplanes and cars. He could repair almost anything. His fondness for German Shepherds, especially Maggie and Scout, and Yellow Lab Cassie will be remembered by all who knew him well. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and camping with his bothers and brothers-in-law. He and Cathy collected Native American and Western art. Ben was very proud to be a member of the San Carlos Apache Tribe. His many relatives and friends there were a source of security and support, especially Homer J. Stevens, with whom he had great plans for exploration and adventure. A memorial service was held March 2 at Lamont Mortuary. Ben’s memory can be honored by contributions to his daughter’s favorite animal rescue called Orphans of the Storm, or the Humane Society, or can be sent in care of Sara Stevens at 1237 Crestwood Drive, Globe, Arizona 85501.
