Rudy Moreno passed away unexpectedly on Friday, December 14, 2012, after a long bout with kidney cancer. He was born on July 31, 1933, in Miami, Arizona, to Francisco M. and Prajedis (Bejarano) Moreno. He attended Bullion Plaza Elementary and graduated from Miami High School in 1951. Pelon played center on the ‘Mighty Miami Vandals’ basketball team which set scoring records and won the State Championship his senior year. He was also named to the All-State Football team as a lineman in 1951. Rudy attended Arizona State College in Flagstaff (NAU). He entered the United States Army in 1953 and was honorably discharged in 1955. He returned to Miami, AZ, and began working at Miami Copper Company. He retired in 1998 after 38 years as a Concentrator Heavy Duty Mechanic. Rudy was inducted into the Miami H.S. Sports Hall of Fame in its inaugural year and, with his Vandal teammates, into the Arizona Hispanic Sports Hall of Fame in 2002. Rudy leaves his wife of 38 years, Mary Anne (Mitchell), his sons, John M. (Bernadette), of Chandler, AZ, and Thomas M. (Jason McBeth) of Washington, D.C., 3 grandsons, John, Jr., Caleb and Gavin, his sister, Genevieve M. Garcia, brother, Francisco Moreno, numerous nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Ernest Rascon and sister, Eva and brother- in-law, Ladislao Garcia and nephew, Robert Garcia. Visitation for Rudy Moreno is scheduled for Tuesday, December 18, at 6pm at Holy Angels’ Church, Globe, Arizona, with Rosary to follow at 7pm. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10am on Wednesday, December 19, with visitation prior at 9am. Interment will take place at Mountain Breeze Memorial Gardens.
