Robert Dalton Bennett

Robin D. Bennett, 70, passed away at his home in Globe, AZ on September 1, 2012. He was born January 7, 1942 to H. A. “Fat” Bennett and Rosamond (Dalton) Bennett in Miami, AZ. Robin grew up in Globe and graduated from Globe High School in 1960. He was in Scouts, DeMolay and he was always involved in sports. During his high school years, he was class president of his freshman and sophomore classes and a member of the Honor Society, Hi-Y Club, Latin Club and the Letterman Club. He played football, basketball and baseball, but his true calling was basketball. Robin’s senior basketball season started on a team considered to be an average team. But the 1960 GHS Tigers had one of the greatest seasons in the school’s basketball history. The Tigers beat Miami twice in the regular season, again for the Class A Southwestern Division Championship in Casa Grande, and again after coming back from a 36-30 half-time deficit to win on the Vandal’s home court in front of a crowd of 2100 for the State Class A Tournament Championship. Robin was selected to be on the squad of the Class A All-Conference team in Casa Grande and the Class A All-State team in Miami. In the three all-state tourney games, Robin’s long-shot artistry boosted him to a leading total of 72 points. He also was a member of the ABC squad for the 1960 AZ All-Star game in Flagstaff. He attended Arizona State College (NAU) for two years on an Athletic Scholarship and transferred to U of A for one year studying Liberal Arts. He was drafted in May 1964 into The United States Army Europe and 7th Army which was and still is the worlds largest army. He served in Stuttgart-Vaihingen, Germany as a postal clerk until April 1966. Over the following 42 years, Robin worked for Cities Service Co. at Pinto Valley, AZ, National Semiconductor in San Jose, CA as a General Foreman in Integrated Circuits, Gila County in job training and Re-Pac for the State of AZ, a real estate development company in Reno, NV, and Enterprise Car Rental in Globe before retiring in 2008. He was an avid, lifelong golfer and a member of the Cobre Valley Country Club for many years and the Longbow Men’s Golf Club. He was also a loyal fan of the Suns, Diamondbacks and U of A athletics. Robin did have the great joy of knowing that his niece and nephews have followed the family tradition of playing golf, that his dad, Fat, will be posthumously inducted into the GHS Hall of Fame later this month, and that his cousin, Rex Mirich, was recently inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame becoming the first player from NAU (1960-63) to earn the rare distinction. Robin was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved Golden Retrievers, Rocky and Baby. He is survived by his brother Bill Bennett, sister-in-law, Bethel Bennett and nephew, Clark Bennett of Miami Gardens, AZ, and his sister, Lu Ann Bennett, and niece and nephew, Meredith and Andrew Holmes, of Las Vegas, NV. Robin’s family appreciates Copper Communities Hospice and Heather, Coty and Alyssa from Arizona Senior Home Care for the loving care you provided. His family also sincerely thanks all of his lifelong friends who knew him as “Rug” and his many, many friends that knew him as Robin for all of the calls, visits, golf games, thoughts and prayers during his 20 month battle with cancer.
