Rocky Miller of Globe, Arizona, passed away at 11:30 pm on July 8, 2012, at the age of 99. He died peacefully at home after a brief illness. Rocky lived a full and colorful life. After serving in the Army during World War II in the Pacific, he began his long career as a mining prospector hunting for uranium in Alaska. In 1950, he came to Globe, Arizona, seeking gold and silver and staked a claim on the Four Bagger Mine located 6 miles north of Globe in the Copper Hills. Rocky met his wife, Esther, while she and her parents were picnicking out in those hills and they were married shortly thereafter. For nearly 40 years he maintained the Ghost Mine Antique and Rock Shop in Globe. He was always very involved in community activities. His love was the Boy Scouts of America and he was actively involved for over 50 years, still serving as a member of the Grand Canyon Council’s advisory council up until his death. For his service to Scouting he received many recognitions and awards, the most significant of which was achieving the Silver Beaver Award, the highest adult scout award. He assisted dozens of local boys in achieving Eagle Scout rank. He also was a founding member of the Gila Community Food Bank, participated in yearly blood drives for the American Red Cross and conducted Christmas toy collections for many years for local needy children. He was an active member of the local VFW and the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
Rocky is survived by his companion of 56 years, Esther, son Dr. William Miller (Eagle Scout), daughter Margaret Payson, grand-daughter Rebecca Payson, grand-son Seth Payson (Eagle Scout) and great-grand-son Michael Johnson.
