Former Globe resident, Mary Katherine (Gaines) Powell, age 86, passed away on October 8, 2011 at Friendship Village in Tempe, AZ She was born in Sasakwa, Oklahoma on June 6, 1925. Daughter of Marshall and Lue (McCain) Gaines. Kathy came from a large family of nine brothers and sisters, she is the last of her siblings. She married Bazel P. Powell on December 29, 1947 in Coalgate, Oklahoma. Kathy and her family moved to Globe, Arizona in 1952. Kathy was a homemaker, she would take in ironing for Dutch and Mary (they owned the laundry matt across the street). In 1963 she went to work for Pete’s Country Store and when A.J. Bayless bought them out she continue to work for A.J. Bayless for 23 years. When the store was not so busy on Sunday mornings she made biscuits and gravy for the employees. Everyone wanted to work on Sundays because they were hoping to get some biscuits and gravy. When she was in school she loved to play basketball, and sometimes she played with all the kids; which they always loved. She enjoyed taking care of her family and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She has lots and lots of nieces and nephews in Oklahoma and Arizona that just adore their Aunt (Mama) Kat. Preceded in death by her husband Bazel P. Powell and her youngest daughter Marsha Marcanti to cancer. Kathy is survived by her children Martina ‘Jane” Haught (Frank), Larry Gaines (Pat), Bobby Powell (Sally) and Jimmy Powell (Michelle) 9 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren. Visitation will be on Sunday, October 16, 2011, @ 12:00 Noon to 1:30 P.M. @ Lamont Mortuary Chapel. Graveside Services will be @ 2:00 P.M. @ Pinal Cemetery.
