James Alan Howell, known as Alan to friends and family, died Jan. 10 at Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center. Born Sept. 1, 1948 in Inspiration to Buford and Peggy Howell, he was 62 years of age. Mr. Howell graduated from Miami High School in 1966. A U.S. Navy veteran, he served aboard the USS Kitty Hawk during the Vietnam War, working on aerial refueling missions for jet fighters. In 1968 he returned to his job at Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. and continued working at the property through several changes of ownership, until retirement in 2008. He was superintendent of asset recovery for Freeport when he retired. He was a long-time member of the Central Heights Fire Department. He enjoyed watching car and boat racing, along with pro rodeo bull riding events. An avid outdoorsman, he delighted in hunting, fishing and camping; it was his greatest joy to spend time camping at A-Cross north of Roosevelt Lake. That enjoyment extended through three generations as he continued the tradition of hunting with his son and granddaughter. Mr. Howell is survived by ?.. A luncheon and celebration of his life is planned Saturday, Jan. 22 at the FOP Lodge in Claypool. Friends and family are invited to stop in between noon and 3 pm. Arrangements are under the care of Lamont Mortuary of Globe.
